Small Kitchens. Big Character: A Guide to Small Bespoke Kitchen Design

There’s often a common misconception that innovative design must be grand in scale, sweeping in both size and gesture. In reality, some of the most thoughtful solutions are found in the smallest of spaces.

This journal explores the beauty and whimsy of small bespoke kitchen design, each one expressing its own unique character, thoughtfully tailored to the environment it sits within.

While you may associate Chamber Furniture with larger kitchen and dining spaces, we are no stranger to designing on a smaller scale. Many clients come to us with rooms that need to work that little bit harder, where thoughtful planning and careful detailing make all the difference.

Whether shaped by compact London living, an apartment where every inch counts, or the need for a smaller set-up to tide you over while a wider renovation takes shape, these spaces often come with their own set of constraints. In some homes, particularly listed properties, the wiggle room for reconfiguration is little to none.

Planning restrictions, existing layouts, and fixed services such as gas and electrics, all play their part in reshaping the possible.

But that’s where things become a little more interesting, with smaller spaces posing different questions.

Achieving your desired aesthetic, while allowing sufficient space to cook, prep and manoeuvre, requires precision and care – qualities we champion at every scale, ensuring that form and function chime in harmony.

And while space may be limited, design is never compromised. Instead, it seeks alternative features that may not suit a larger space.

A café curtain beneath the sink, for instance, can add a touch of softness and charm, while neatly sidestepping the practical issue of cupboard doors clashing in tighter layouts. Open shelving or plate racks offer both storage and breathing space – keeping the room feeling lighter, less enclosed, and a little more relaxed.

These gestures do more than solve practical problems. They bring personality to the forefront.

Take “Little Italy,” for example.

In this cosy basement, a classic AGA sits comfortably at the heart of the space, grounded by terracotta flooring and a carefully considered palette. A thoughtful choice of paint by Edward Bulmer, paired with curated tiling and soft fabric pelmets, creates a scene that feels warm, nostalgic, and evocative of Italian sensibility.

Designed in collaboration with Lyn Goddard of HSI Designs, the aim was to have fun with the space. The added depth of the bespoke cabinetry enables the kitchen run to double as a deep bar area for hosting parties, while discreetly housing laundry appliances. Its fresh pop of colour lifts the basement setting without overwhelming it. The result is a gentle nod to Italy, balanced with everyday functionality.

Alternatively, a guest annexe may call for a more contemporary glow, incorporating retractable doors to maximise space, while responding to the architectural language of the building itself.

Whatever the setting, be it a guest annexe, garden room, apartment kitchen, or simply your own pocket of creativity, small bespoke kitchen design can be remarkably impactful.

Small in scale, bold in character.

Individuality is always our starting point.

Because luxury isn’t found in the ordinary – it’s found in the things that you love. Since 1994.

Every Chamber Furniture project begins with a conversation. If you’re imagining a space shaped by the things you love most, we’d love to hear your story.
