From Foundations to Finish: Designing a Bespoke Wellness and Entertainment Space

A project delivered in collaboration with E2 Architecture and interior designer Jess Cooper of Cooper & Cooper Interiors.

Continuing on from our previous post, this article explores how this bespoke wellness and entertainment space came to be. Designed from the inside out, the space has been shaped around how it will be lived in, and the bespoke interiors that support it – considered as one from the very beginning.

As outlined previously, the brief was to accommodate different modes of relaxation. A space that allows for multiple ways of switching off – depending on the day, the moment, or simply who is using it. Arranged across a dedicated wellness suite, complete with a state-of-the-art gym, and a basement bar and entertainment space, the aim was never to choose between function and enjoyment, but to allow them to coexist – naturally, and without compromise.

From the outset, our involvement began at conception. Having worked with the client on previous projects, a level of trust had already been established. Commissioned early, we were able to bring together a trusted team of collaborators – individuals we work with regularly and whose approach aligns with our own. This continuity allowed the project to move forward with clarity and shared understanding from the very beginning.

It’s an approach that does not always present itself, but when it does, it allows every element to feel entirely resolved – not adapted, but inherently considered

Working closely with the client, architect and interior designer, we defined the footprint of the space. Rather than applying joinery to a completed structure, building principles, wall placement, layout and proportion were guided by the interiors that would follow.

Within the gym, the focus was to create a space that could adapt to each member of the family – responding to individual routines, preferences and pace. Routine informed equipment, which in turn guided the layout of the space and the bespoke joinery designed to support it.

From full-height mirrors positioned to refine movement, to the placement of the media wall, integrated sound system and air conditioning, each element was considered in relation to how the space would actually be used – rather than aesthetics alone.

Natural light was also a guiding principle. Windows were positioned to draw light deep into the space, creating an environment that feels open, energised and inviting throughout the day.

Stepping away from the calm of the wellness suite, the basement level embraces a more expressive, evening-led atmosphere – a setting for hosting, conversation and ease.

The layout here has also been carefully arranged around moments of use. The bar sits adjacent to retractable doors, allowing light to filter through during the day and providing easy access to the outdoor seating area. The lounge is set slightly further back – creating a more intimate setting as the space transitions into evening.

Opposite the bar, a fully conditioned wine room provides storage for a range of bottle sizes – positioned perfectly for selecting a bottle and settling in with a glass at the bar.

Knowing how a space should feel – and the bespoke elements that will define it – formed the starting point.

Opportunities to work from a blank canvas are rare. But when they arise, they allow the design to unfold without constraint, and the relationship between architecture and interiors to be considered as one.

Without the limitations of an existing structure, the potential of bespoke design is fully realised – where form and function are not adapted, but established from the very beginning.
