Designing Wellness for the Home: The Rise of Bespoke Home Gyms

As explored in our opening journal of the year, the home has the power to support wellbeing – or just as easily, to stand in its way. This becomes particularly apparent when we consider how we move, train and restore. When wellness is thoughtfully woven into the fabric of a home, barriers begin to fall away, allowing healthy habits to feel instinctive rather than imposed.

This shift is increasingly reflected across the wider design conversation. In a recent issue of Elle Decoration, the focus turns to what editor Ben Spriggs describes as ‘a new era of architecture for wellbeing,’ observing that ‘training with half-rate equipment in dingy, sweaty basements was never going to inspire anyone.’ His commentary points to the rise of beautifully designed home gyms and wellness spaces as a more enduring solution. As so often, design holds the answer.

We have witnessed this evolution first-hand. It was a family’s genuine love for training and keeping fit – an activity that brings them together – that inspired the creation of our first dedicated home gym, spa and wellness retreat. Rather than a short-lived health kick, this was a space conceived for long-term enjoyment. Designed as an integral part of the home, it offers something for everyone: a place to move, to restore, to gather, or simply to pause. Whether unwinding in the sauna during colder months, maintaining a regular training routine, or taking a quiet moment to care, the space adapts effortlessly to mood and need.

The architectural foundations were thoughtfully shaped by E2 Architecture, whose vision placed wellbeing firmly at its core. From the overall layout to the careful positioning of slimline windows, natural light was treated as a material in its own right – introduced with intention to enhance movement, openness and clarity throughout the gym and spa. Their work defines not only the structure, but the atmosphere, allowing light and volume to guide the experience.

Alongside this, interior designer Jess Cooper collaborated closely on the curation of the interiors, bringing a refined sensitivity to how the spaces would feel, flow and function day to day. Together, these architectural and interior decisions ensure that the wellness centre feels resolved, calm and purposeful – never clinical, never excessive.

Within the gym, the focus turned to spatial planning and bespoke elements that respond to real patterns of use. The footprint and layout were shaped around favoured equipment and routines the family regularly practise, resulting in a space that feels intuitive rather than overfilled. The equipment is solely Technogym – performance-led, with hand-selected weights tailored to each individual.

A bespoke media wall integrates television and sound seamlessly, while black-framed mirrors – crafted to identical dimensions and positioned throughout– subtly amplify light and height, creating an elusive sense of scale. With generous ceiling heights and a restrained palette, the design allows both architecture and movement to breathe. It is intentionally minimal – a sentiment echoed throughout Elle Decoration’s wellness focus – where clarity and purpose outweigh decoration.

In a space such as this, exercise carries no sense of obligation. Instead, movement becomes something you are drawn towards – invited by a setting that feels motivating rather than demanding. It reflects a broader shift in how wellness is approached at home: no longer relegated to forgotten corners or basements, but realised as a refined, architectural environment in its own right – deeply personal, and designed to support not only physical strength, but mental clarity and restoration.

When architecture, interiors and bespoke craftsmanship work in harmony, even the gym at home becomes a place of return, balance and pleasure.
